Our
Story
Tail Blazers was founded in 2000 by Tamara Low and Brent Hauberg, both veterans of the natural health and supplement industry.
Their journey into pet nutrition began when they welcomed dogs into their home. Wanting the very best for them, Tamara and Brent started researching pet foods — and what they discovered surprised them.
They learned about the benefits of raw, minimally processed diets and the impact that artificial additives, preservatives, and low-quality ingredients can have on animal health. At the same time, they became aware of concerning manufacturing practices that were common within the pet food industry.
That knowledge sparked a vision: a health food store — but for pets.
From that idea, Tail Blazers was born.
Over the years, the “trailblazing” concept of focusing on natural nutrition and higher-quality pet products has become widely embraced by pet owners who want better options for their animals.
Today, Tail Blazers has grown to over 22 locations across Canada, and the passion that inspired Tamara and Brent continues to drive every franchise owner and team member.
For dogs and cats, holistic foods typically means diets rich in animal proteins, healthy fats, and natural nutrients, with minimal processing and no artificial additives.
At Tail Blazers, we believe raw diets —
often referred to as BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones and Raw Food) —
represent one of the most natural ways to feed dogs and cats. These diets focus on whole foods such as raw meat, bones, and organs that naturally contain enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.
Better Nutrition Starts With Better Ingredients
Supporters of raw feeding also note that dogs share over 99% of their DNA with wolves, suggesting their digestive systems remain well adapted to animal-based diets.
Raw foods contain natural enzymes that support digestion and nutrient absorption. Because of this, many believe they are easier for pets to digest compared to heavily processed foods. That said, every household and pet is different. While raw diets are an excellent option for many, convenience and lifestyle often lead pet owners to choose other formats.
